China anti-addiction — play-time gates, not identity

China anti-addiction is play-time, spend, and minors access — not identity collection. Games in Mainland China must enforce age verification and NPPA time gates; utility apps often do not.

Frequently asked questions

What is China anti-addiction for games?

China anti-addiction is the NPPA play-time, spend, and minors-access gate for online games in Mainland China. Games must connect the National Anti-Addiction Real Name Verification System, refuse unverified users — including guest mode — and enforce the current time window plus paid-service caps for users under 18. Identity collection itself is a different job.

Is age verification China the same as real-name identity?

No. Age verification China uses a verified age to turn play-time and spend gates on. Real-name identity answers who the user is. Your team still needs identity rails to know the age — but finishing identity APIs does not finish anti-addiction China. See the real-name Guide for the identity map.

Do utility apps need anti-addiction China rails?

Usually no for the NPPA game system. Utility apps may still need real-name identity for chat, UGC, or payments. Online games distributed through China stores usually need anti-addiction beside ISBN. Classify the product before you staff either rail.

What play-time window applies to minors games China?

The 2021 NPPA notice, in force from 1 September 2021, allows online game service to minors only from 20:00 to 21:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and statutory holidays — one hour on those days, and no service at other times. Minors means citizens under 18. The 2019 notice’s longer daily windows no longer control.

Can HQ OAuth replace NPPA play-time gates?

No. Overseas identity providers and email-only signup do not connect the NPPA anti-addiction system, do not prove store-side time and spend enforcement, and do not replace a China organizing path. Residual HQ OAuth can stay off the China game journey.

Can product teams finish anti-addiction without Mainland China ops?

Usually no. NPPA system access, Chinese-language operator consoles, store proof, and live play-time enforcement sit on rails most global teams lack. That is when a China landing partner becomes the realistic path. Your team still owns product class and whether the SKU is a game.
